The City Nature Challenge is an annual four-day global bioblitz, run by the community science teams at the California Academy of Sciences and the Natural History Museum of Los Angeles County, where people around the world find and document wild plants and animals in their cities. What started in 2016 as a friendly competition between Los Angeles and San Francisco has grown into a worldwide collaborative effort — in 2025 alone, nearly 103,000 participants logged over 3.3 million observations across more than 73,000 species.
