Newfoundland – Birds and More

Presenter: Howard Heffler

In June 2022, Howard and Lyn Heffler visited Newfoundland for 18 days. The primary focus was birding – specifically sea birds. They also wanted to learn more about the history of Canada’s youngest province; interestingly, the one with the oldest European settlements. There are several easily accessible seabird colonies with (truly) millions of nesting birds. They joined a three-day birding tour of the Avalon peninsula and explored the rest of the island on their own. All the way to Gros Morin National Park and L’Anse aux Meadows National Historic Site for a total of 3000 km on the rental car. Birding highlights included: Atlantic Puffin, Common Murre, Northern Gannet, Leach’s Storm-Petrel, and more.

Howard Heffler has been a Nature Calgary member for 20+ years. He has participated in many field trips, including leading field outings, and coordinating the field trip program for the past few years. He is a retired engineer (that is likely obvious to all of you), with a 45 year-career in pollution control and environmental management.
