About

Appreciating and learning about Calgary’s nature

Nature Calgary encourages the appreciation, observation, study, conservation and protection of the natural world in and around Calgary, Alberta. We host events for all ages to explore and learn about the many natural areas within and beyond the city. Everyone is invited to join – come for an event, become a member or volunteer.

Volunteer-led since 1955

We have been sharing in the appreciation and education of Calgary’s natural history for decades. The Calgary Bird Club was formed in 1955 and evolved into the Calgary Field Naturalists’ Society, a group of naturalists dedicated in preserving many of the natural areas that Calgarians enjoy today. Although the name has changed through the years, we remain dedicated on our mission: to preserve, educate and appreciate the natural world.

Nature Calgary is a registered society (Calgary Field Naturalists’ Society) and we are governed by a volunteer board of directors. The events, activities and advocacy are led by volunteers.

Events and activities for all ages

Nature is for everyone. Nature Calgary organizes events and activities throughout the year for all ages and for all levels of interest in nature. Here are some of the events and activities that you can join:

Field Trips
Led by volunteer naturalists, our field trips explore the natural areas within and beyond Calgary. Take a walk outside and learn about the landscapes, plants and wildlife in your backyard.

Speaker Series
Special guests and Nature Calgary members share their experiences and research in our monthly presentation series. From September to May, join us to learn more about nature within Calgary and throughout the world.

Bird Study Group
Join fellow birders for field trips and presentations. No matter if you’re new to birding or an expert, our Bird Study Group shares in the appreciation and education of local and international birds.

Nature Kids
Through a partnership with Nature Alberta, we host events for youth and families to learn about nature and enjoy the outdoors. Our Nature Kids events are affordable and educational events for Calgary families.

Events throughout the year
Nature Calgary organizes bus trips, special events and an annual banquet. Whether the event is held indoors or outside, we invite all Calgarians to enjoy, appreciate and preserve the natural areas inside and surrounding the city.

Supporting the appreciation of nature

All membership and event fees go towards covering the costs of the activities and sharing in the appreciation of nature. Our education grants program funds field trips, outings and special guests for K-12 students. We advocate for the preservation of natural areas by engaging with the city council and through partnerships with conservation groups.
