Each year, hundreds of thousands of people around the world participate in Christmas Bird Counts. Calgary is no exception with nearly 400 people participating across the city in an effort to identify, count, and record every single bird overwintering within our count circle. Essentially this is a census of our winter bird populations. The Calgary Count Circle is 24km wide and is centered on the 10th street bridge over the Bow River. For 73 years, Calgarian’s have participated in this event giving us a deeper look into how our urban landscape has changed and affected the biodiversity within it. It’s important and at the same time fun!
Join expert guides from Nature Calgary while participating in the field! We’ll also talk about some of the history of the island, some of the changes it’s gone through and maybe even spot one of the beavers or mink that frequent the Island!
Our knowledgeable guide will share fascinating insights about the birds and other wildlife you encounter and talk about their behaviours, making this a great educational opportunity for nature enthusiasts of all ages while contributing to citizen science.
We will have binoculars available for participants who don’t have them. Space is limited so don’t miss your chance to discover the beauty and diversity of Calgary’s birdlife on this exciting nature walk!
These walks are presented in partnership between East Village and Nature Calgary, with all registration fees being donated directly to Nature Calgary.
All walks will start and end at the East Village Headquarters, located directly north of 656 Confluence Way SE on the RiverWalk pathway.
