DESCRIPTION:Not ANOTHER Pandemic—Highly pathogenic avian influenza in wild birds \nPresenter: Dr. Dayna Goldsmith\nThis presentation will begin with a brief introduction of what it means to be an influenza virus and the history of avian influenza in Canada. The presentation will then move into a review of the current outbreak with a focus on wild birds including how we do surveillance for avian influenza in the province\, a discussion of what I have seen here at the diagnostic lab (this will include images of dead birds and tissues) and current trends across North America. At the end of the talk I will go through the answers to some commonly asked questions including those that have already been brought forward by the group. \nPresenter Bio:\nDr. Dayna Goldsmith Graduated from UCVM in 2013 as part of the second graduating class of vet students. Completed a residency in Anatomic Pathology at the University of California Davis becoming a diplomat of the American College of Veterinary Pathologists in 2016. Worked as a sessional instructor as part of the department of Ecosystem and Public Health at UCVM for 9 months in 2016-2017. Seafood mislabeling in Calgary and its implications for conservation\nAbstract \nCalgarians consume a lot of seafood\, but what you bought may not always be what you got. Seafood mislabeling has been detected in cities worldwide. Here we explore a multi-year dataset collected by undergraduate biology students\, comparing product names to their DNA-based identifications. The results include some surprises that may impact the flourishing of both us and the fishes. \n  \nAbout the Author \nMatthew Morris has a PhD in evolutionary biology from the University of Calgary. His research explores the evolution of three spine stickleback\, as well as the intersection of conservation and naming practices. The species was listed as Endangered in Canada in 2019 due to steep declines in the Canadian population. In Banff National Park\, Black Swifts have been observed nesting in the park and on the eastern edge of their range since 1919! Researchers are implementing an array of tools to better understand these cryptic creatures who spend most of their lives on the wing! Come find out how Black Swifts are doing in Johnston Canyon and how creativity is key to studying them. \nJennifer Reimer\, Project Lead for the Black Swift Monitoring Program in Banff National Park since 2015\, has followed birds across the globe for many years\, from studying pair duets of the Eastern Whipbird in Australia to conducting seabird inventories off Haida Gwaii and Vancouver Island. While in school\, she spent a summer working with Agriculture Canada on a pollinator research study and this was the beginning of her love of native bees. DESCRIPTION:High Latitude Birding\nMiles Tindal \nMany birders like to travel and enjoy the spectacular birdlife in other parts of the world.  The birds that breed in the high latitudes of the northern and southern hemispheres can be some of the most spectacular and fascinating of all.  Covid has forced the cancellation or postponement of most birding travel for the foreseeable future.  So in the meantime\, this talk and slideshow will share some beautiful images of some of the most interesting birdlife of Greenland\, the arctic islands of Nunavut\, the north slope of Alaska and the Aleutian Islands in the northern hemisphere\, and the Falkland Islands\, South Georgia and the Antarctic Peninsular in the Southern Hemisphere.  Many of these places are challenging to access\, and so some travel tips for birders will be included for each location. \nZoom meeting will open at 7:00\, meeting starts at 7:30pm \nSee the Nature Calgary Newsletter for the Zoom link.
