DESCRIPTION:What: Bird Study Group – Birds Canada!\nWhen: Wednesday\, October 4\, 2023\nTime: 7:30PM\nPresenters: Andrea Gress and Amanda Bichel with Birds Canada \nJoin Andrea and Amanda as they speak to what and who Birds Canada is followed by what they both do there.  Andrea will speak on behalf of the Ontario Piping Plover Conservation Program and their podcast “The Warblers”.  Amanda will discuss key biodiversity areas in Alberta and provide some Alberta examples. \nPresenter Bios\nAndrea Gress: Andrea Gress (she/her) studied Renewable Resource Management at the University of Saskatchewan. She pivoted towards birds\, after an internship in South Africa. Upon returning\, she worked with Piping Plovers in Saskatchewan and now coordinates the Ontario Piping Plover Conservation Program for Birds Canada. She also hosts the Warblers Podcast for Birds Canada\, where she sneaks plover related content into as many episodes as possible! \nAmanda Bichel: I have a background in Environmental Studies and Biology\, and have worked with birds\, bats\, soil\, and water. Connecting with nature is what motivates me to work in conservation\, and the hope that the next generation has the same (or better) opportunity to experience the beauty of nature I’ve enjoyed my whole life. My role is to coordinate the Key Biodiversity Areas Program for Birds Canada. I get to work with partners\, experts\, government\, Indigenous Communities\, and more on transitioning our Important Bird and Biodiversity Areas to KBAs. I am lucky to work with enthusiastic\, dedicated people to identify the most important places for biodiversity in Canada. DESCRIPTION:New Zealand\nSpeakers: John and Lorrie Anderson \nLorrie and I traveled to New Zealand in November of 2022 and stayed for 5 weeks (which is their early spring). Birding is a little different in New Zealand\, as a lot of the endemics and migrants are seen on pelagic trips with the rest of the endemics located at predator free locations throughout the islands. Introduced species were relatively easy to find. We were on a guided birding trip\, for 3 of the 5 weeks\,  covering 4200 km. We traveled from the North Island all the way down to Stewart Island in the south.  We saw & photographed interesting birds and encountered amazing scenery along the way.

Whether you are a seasoned birdwatcher or a curious beginner\, this talk promises to be an informative and enjoyable experience that will leave you with a greater appreciation for the beauty and wonder of these magnificent creatures. \nPresenter Bio:\nDan Arndt is a Wildlife Biologist with a passion for high quality data collection supporting environmental surveys throughout western Canada. To him\, the most important aspect of his work is the quality and integrity of the data that is collected\, analyzed\, and ultimately reported on. With this in mind\, it is absolutely vital to any team to have a top notch bird biologist to help with those data\, and train others who have the desire and interest to learn. \nDan’s area of specialization is focused on bird surveys of all types\, including breeding birds\, sharp-tailed grouse\, burrowing owls\, and bird migration surveys to support renewable energy projects. He also has extensive experience conducting mammal\, reptile\, and amphibian surveys throughout Alberta\, Saskatchewan\, and Manitoba. \nHe loves the work that he does\, and his strongest asset is his unquenchable thirst for knowledge\, and learning more about the natural history of not only his survey subjects\, but all aspects of the environment.

DESCRIPTION:Karen McDaniel spent 45 years in education as a teacher\, administrator and professor starting in Kindersley and Saskatoon\, Saskatchewan before moving to Calgary\, Alberta for a long career with the CBE. After retirement\, she went on to Eastern Washington University in Cheney\, Washington.  She eventually returned to Calgary to work at SAIT negotiating articulation agreements provincially\, nationally and internationally so that SAIT graduates could take their two-year diplomas as two year credit towards four-year degrees. \nThis work afforded her many opportunities to travel for pleasure and work\, so far to over 40 countries. When she really retired\, her children were afraid that she would be bored and therefore needed some hobbies. Photography and geocaching – a world-wide scavenger game based on GPS coordinates – keep her very busy.  She is addicted to both! \nShe knows that every day that she is not listed in the obituaries\, is going to be a good one! \nThe McDaniel’s Great African Adventure\nIn 2014\, Karen and her daughter\, Laurel\, undertook their own African adventure to fulfill a birthday promise Karen made to her daughter. They planned a trip to Kruger Park in South Africa \, Victoria Falls in Zimbabwe and the Okavango Delta in Botswana. It was an amazing holiday that included photographing everything that walked\, flew and grew! They saw the Big Five animals plus so much more. The bird life was stunning as were the landscapes and experiences which included walking with lions\, an elephant charge (totally unplanned!) and amazing sights and sounds. Nothing like experiencing a hippo scratching its back against the cabin foundation poles in the middle of the night or listening to baboons screeching through the night! \nHer presentation will give you a taste of travelling in these areas and hopefully encourage you to look at such an adventure in your future.

DESCRIPTION:Investigating potential introgression between two North American passerines in western Canada\nSpeaker: Aaron Veale \nHybridization may increase when one species is rarer than the other (e.g.\, when one species does not have an established population\, in endangered\, or is on the edge of its range). With the eastward range expansion of Western Bluebirds (Sialia mexicana)\, territory originally held solely by Mountain Bluebirds (Sialia currucoides)\, brings the two species into contact. Both are sexually dimorphic birds and obligate secondary cavity nesters\, preferring open woodland habitat where they feed on terrestrial insects. The low initial population density of Western Bluebirds in Alberta may cause scarcity in mate availability\, leading to competition for limited mating opportunities with Mountain Bluebirds. Although distinct species\, pairings between the two results in viable\, fertile offspring. Using next-generation sequencing\, the aim of my study is to establish the frequency of heterospecific mating\, analyze areas of overlap for both first generation and advanced hybrids\, and detect genetic introgression in Mountain Bluebird populations.

This presentation will offer an overview of riparian habitats including clues of plants and animals to look for\, discussion of the functions riparian areas provide and services they provide and highlight management actions that can maintain and improve riparian health and function. \nPresenter Bio: Kerri O’Shaughnessy is a Riparian Specialist for Cows and Fish and has been doing this type of work for 24 years with Cows and Fish.  In her job\, she works with individuals\, communities\, agencies and organizations on better understanding our watersheds and the riparian areas within them. She is based in Edmonton but her time with Cows and Fish has allowed her to explore many of the natural regions of Alberta (and beyond) and meet many people stewarding our lands and water.  Kerri has a Bachelor of Science in Environmental and Conservation Science from the University of Alberta; is a Professional Agrologist and is excited to share what she has learned over the years with hopes to inspire others to look at their landscapes with fresh eyes.

This isolation has resulted in some endemic Shetland species and several Arctic and Northern European visitors and vagrants that are rarely\, if ever\, seen in the rest of the country.\nAndrew will talk about his visit to the Shetlands this summer. DESCRIPTION:Not ANOTHER Pandemic—Highly pathogenic avian influenza in wild birds \nPresenter: Dr. Dayna Goldsmith\nThis presentation will begin with a brief introduction of what it means to be an influenza virus and the history of avian influenza in Canada. The presentation will then move into a review of the current outbreak with a focus on wild birds including how we do surveillance for avian influenza in the province\, a discussion of what I have seen here at the diagnostic lab (this will include images of dead birds and tissues) and current trends across North America. At the end of the talk I will go through the answers to some commonly asked questions including those that have already been brought forward by the group. \nPresenter Bio:\nDr. Dayna Goldsmith Graduated from UCVM in 2013 as part of the second graduating class of vet students. Completed a residency in Anatomic Pathology at the University of California Davis becoming a diplomat of the American College of Veterinary Pathologists in 2016. Worked as a sessional instructor as part of the department of Ecosystem and Public Health at UCVM for 9 months in 2016-2017. Seafood mislabeling in Calgary and its implications for conservation\nAbstract \nCalgarians consume a lot of seafood\, but what you bought may not always be what you got. Seafood mislabeling has been detected in cities worldwide. Here we explore a multi-year dataset collected by undergraduate biology students\, comparing product names to their DNA-based identifications. The results include some surprises that may impact the flourishing of both us and the fishes. \n  \nAbout the Author \nMatthew Morris has a PhD in evolutionary biology from the University of Calgary. His research explores the evolution of three spine stickleback\, as well as the intersection of conservation and naming practices. The species was listed as Endangered in Canada in 2019 due to steep declines in the Canadian population. In Banff National Park\, Black Swifts have been observed nesting in the park and on the eastern edge of their range since 1919! Researchers are implementing an array of tools to better understand these cryptic creatures who spend most of their lives on the wing! Come find out how Black Swifts are doing in Johnston Canyon and how creativity is key to studying them. \nJennifer Reimer\, Project Lead for the Black Swift Monitoring Program in Banff National Park since 2015\, has followed birds across the globe for many years\, from studying pair duets of the Eastern Whipbird in Australia to conducting seabird inventories off Haida Gwaii and Vancouver Island. After completing her graduate studies on the importance of developing Canada’s first marine protected areas for seabirds\, she was soon drawn back to the Rockies and has been working in wildlife management for Parks Canada ever since. \n \n \n \n
