DESCRIPTION:The Inglewood Bird Sanctuary Reconnection Project\nThe Inglewood Bird Sanctuary has been one of the Cities most ecologically important parks for nearly a century. Unfortunately\, due to its age\, some of the hydraulic structures that control the water level in the lagoon have passed their useful life and are putting the park’s lagoon at risk. In addition\, as part of the Bend in the Bow review process\, the concept of reconnecting the lagoon to the river was suggested to improve water quality\, reduce water level fluctuations in the lagoon as well as improve fish habitat. The City has undertaken a detailed analysis of the options and is proposing a project to ensure the Park can remain an ecological hot spot through the next century as well. The City Project Manager will discuss the sites history\, how it has changed over the years\, its current ecologic importance\, the proposed design\, and how the design managed the existing park and rivers ecology\, hydrology\, and river morphology. \nPresenter: Jonathan Slaney\, he is a planning engineer with the City’s Watershed Planning team.

DESCRIPTION:Antarctica: History\, Science and Overwintering at Scott Base\nWhat would you say to a chance to travel to one of the most remote job sites in the world to preserve artefacts from arguably some of the most iconic historic sites on the planet?  If you were Melinda Bell\, you’d say yes – twice!  As a member of the Antarctic Heritage Trust Winter Conservator Crew (2009 and 2010)\, the task required living and working at a science base on an island at “the end of the earth” (or close to it…)\, all in the pursuit of heritage conservation.  This presentation will provide an overview of that adventure – caring for historic artefacts (associated with the Scott and Shackleton expeditions)\, learning some polar science\, pitching in\, meeting “the locals” (oh\, penguins…)\, and enjoying the scenery…       \nSpeaker: Melinda (Mindy) Bell\nWith a keen childhood interest in “Little House on the Prairie” and “Indiana Jones”\, it was inevitable that Melinda pursued an Honours Bachelor of Arts in Anthropology (Lakehead University)\, followed by a Diploma in Collections Conservation and Management (Sir Sandford Fleming College).  Her professional career has required the wearing of many hats (archaeology\, history\, research\, records management\, artefact preservation)\, but has proved that you can get experience and find gainful employment with an Arts degree. She has worked at Fort William Historical Park (Thunder Bay)\, studied rock art in Lake of the Woods\, dug for bison bones in SW Manitoba\, volunteered at the Canadian Canoe Museum (Peterborough)\, interned at Colonial Williamsburg (Virginia)\, and travelled to the other side of the world to take part in heritage preservation projects in New Zealand and at Scott Base (Ross Island\, Antarctica).  Melinda currently wears her records management hat\, but still makes times to visit museums and historic sites\, and to take up new hobbies (as a very fledgling birder).

DESCRIPTION:Insects: Conservation\, Perceptions\, and Early Education\nWhy do humans prefer some insects over others? Why are we scared of insects that are harmless? How does our negative or confused attitude towards these animals impact conservation efforts? What influences beliefs in our early years of life? Elizabeth argues that we need to think critically about the messaging that children receive about insects and that we need to promote early development of positive perceptions of insects if we are to protect these vulnerable creatures. Elizabeth is also an Instructor at Grande Prairie Regional College\, in the Child Care and Early Education diploma program. She is currently working on her Forest School Canada Practitioner training course and is a Board member of the Canadian Network for Environmental Education and Communication.

DESCRIPTION:Can drones help save our bird populations?\nDrones: A New Tool for Bird Research and Conservation \nThe use of small unmanned vehicle systems (UVS; aka drones) is rapidly evolving as wildlife biologists and managers all over the worldadopt them for conducting population surveys\, tracking radio-tagged animals\, sensing and observing animals in sequestered or dangerous places\, mapping and monitoring wild habitats\, and deterring poachers.  This naturally includes avian species.    \n In the last ten years\, Dr. David Bird and his students and collaborators have experimented with using drones torecord the nest contents of several raptorial bird species nesting in Saskatchewan and Montana\, and monitor their respective behavioral responses. They also monitored the abundance of nesting common terns in a colony in New Brunswick\, to count seabirds in colonies in Newfoundland and the Arctic\, to map breeding habitat of threatened least bitterns near Baie-du-Febvre\, Quebec\, to detect heat signatures from bird nests\, to radio-track songbirds in Montmorency\, Quebec\, and to disperse nuisance birds such as starlings from vineyards and blueberry crops in British Columbia.   \nCompared to using manned light airplanes or helicopters\, flying drones can be cheaper\, greener\, less obtrusive\, and much safer (the number one source of mortality for wildlife biologists is dying in a plane or helicopter crash!).  And more recent research suggests yet another benefit – acquiring more accurate and precise counts of target wildlife.  But as Dr. Bird points out in his visual presentation\, we still have much to learn before fully embracing this technology.    \nSpeaker: Dr. David Bird \nEmeritus Professor of Wildlife Biology and Director of the Avian Science and Conservation Centre of McGill University in Montreal\, Quebec. DESCRIPTION:Adventures with the earliest amphibious arthropods: human history and ancient ecology\nSpeaker: Dr. Robert MacNaughton \nThe earliest evidence of animals leaving the water to move about on land comes from fossilized arthropod trackways in the Cambrian of eastern North America. Such trackways were first recognized and collected in the late 1840s at Beauharnois\, near Montreal. The collected trackways made their way to the United Kingdom\, to be described by Sir Richard Owen\, the anatomist best remembered today for coining the term “dinosaur”. Owen provided detailed\, well-illustrated descriptions\, and gave the trackways a Linnean name: Protichnites.  After that promising start\, a complicated history followed\, including the loss and eventual rediscovery of the Beauharnois specimens. This talk will trace that history\, review some recent work on the earliest landward excursions of animals\, and discuss the challenges of studying and classifying the footprints that those creatures left behind.   \nRobert MacNaughton is a Research Scientist in the Calgary office of the Geological Survey of Canada (GSC). His research focuses on the tectonics\, paleontology\, and stratigraphic evolution of northwestern mainland Canada. Since his undergraduate days\, he has been fascinated by ichnology—the study of fossilized animal behaviour. He has been fortunate to indulge this fascination through studies of the Cambrian “explosion”\, early life in the deep seas\, and the earliest history of animals on dry land.
