SUMMARY:Bird Study Group - March 2020
DESCRIPTION:Speaker: Gavin McKinnon \nThroughout 2019\, Gavin McKinnon traveled throughout Alberta looking for birds. His goal was to see 300 species within the province in one calendar year. SUMMARY:Bird Study Group - February 2020
DESCRIPTION:“War between the subspecies?  The continued northern march of the southern subspecies of White crowned Sparrows in Alberta.” \nSpeaker: Dr. Scott Lovell \nOver the past four years\, I have examined song\, plumage\, and genetics of two subspecies of White-crowned Sparrows along the front range of the Rockies\, from Waterton to just east of Jasper.  Preliminary data analyses suggests that the song of the southern subspecies has been moving northern at a very rapid rate over the past ~35 years\, and the contact zone between the southern and northern subspeceis of White-crowned Sparrows has moved north as well.  Plumage transitions have moved north too\, but at a much more gradual pace from the southern plumage pattern to the northern plumage pattern; unlike song which is a very rapid and narrow transition.  During my presentation\, I will present background into research into White-crowned Sparrows overall\, focusing in Alberta\, show what I have found during the last 4 years of my research in terms of changes in song and plumage\, and finally implications and suggestions as to why we are seeing this pattern.

SUMMARY:Bird Study Group February 2019
DESCRIPTION:Alberta 2018 – An Alberta Big Year\nPresented by Howard Heffler \nHoward Heffler is a chemical engineer who spent most of his career in Calgary as an environmental manager in the petroleum industry. He and his wife\, Lyn\, have always participated in outdoor activities such as hiking\, skiing\, and paddling. Over the past twenty years\, birding has grown to become a primary interest. During 2018\, Howard\, with the support of Lyn and friends\, focused all of his birding efforts in Alberta.  \nHoward’s presentation will first describe the planning\, organization and results of his “big year”. The objective was not to set any record\, but to develop a better appreciation of Alberta’s birds and ecoregions. The second half will be an entertaining series of anecdotes and adventures to reach the year-end total of 304 species.  \nBird Study Group meetings are held at 7:30pm the first Wednesday of the month at Cardel Theatre (180 Quarry Park Boulevard SE)\, with the exception of January 2019\, where the group will meet the 2nd Wednesday. Free for members\, $5 for non-members. \n

SUMMARY:Bird Study Group December 2018
DESCRIPTION:“Getting Down” with Calgary Area Birds\nA tour of Calgary area birds as seen through the lens of amateur nature photographer Tony LePrieur. Tony will share bird pictures captured over the past couple of years\, providing IDs\, locations and tips/stories around individual pictures. \n  \nAbout Tony\nTony was introduced to photography by a friend while watching puffins in Newfoundland. He has been capturing wildlife memories in the Calgary area for the past 5 years. A self-described “Complete Amateur” especially on the technical side\, he has been doing his best to learn the art of wildlife photography in large part through the generous help of other Calgary area photographers. Shooting handheld\, many of his shoots are taken in the laying position where “getting down” helps stabilize his camera and give an interesting POV. His pictures have been featured on the Birds Calgary site\, City of Calgary Publications\, Friends of Fish Creek\, the Treehugger Blog and a co-workers T-shirt (smile).
