DESCRIPTION:We head east once again in search of winter visiting birds and residents. Chances for Snowy Owl and other winter visitors such as Redpoll\, Horned Lark\, and Snow Bunting. Strong possibilities are Gray Partridge\, Ring-necked Pheasant\, Bald Eagle\, and Great Horned Owl. Rarer possibilities include Gyrfalcon\, Prairie Falcon\, and Northern Goshawk. There may be others. DESCRIPTION:Beasts of Birdin’ with David Scott\nBorn and raised in northern Ontario\, David Scott began venturing from home to find birds at age 16 and has been an avid birder and naturalist ever since. After moving to southern Alberta\, he came to love the birds of the prairies\, badlands\, foothills\, and mountains as he did those of the boreal forest on the Canadian shield. A librarian by trade\, David works at the University of Lethbridge and serves as interim chair of the Alberta Bird Record Committee and the Christmas Bird Count editor for the province. He has also spent several years on the board of Nature Lethbridge and has authored and coauthored articles published in Nature Alberta Magazine\, North American Birds\, and Western Birds. However\, for the purposes of this presentation\, David is one of six birders of dubious sanity who recently undertook a big day from Cold Lake to the Crowsnest Pass in an effort to tally as many bird species as possible in 24 hours. \nDavid resides in Lethbridge\, Alberta with his wife\, Emma\, and son\, Lewis\, who recently received his first pair of binoculars. \nMembers will receive a Zoom link ahead of the event. \n

SUMMARY:February Speaker Series: Coal Mining in the Eastern Slopes
DESCRIPTION:Join CPAWS’ Katie Morrison for a talk on coal mining in the Eastern Slopes & how we can protect them. \nKatie Morrison is the Executive Director for the Canadian Parks and Wilderness Society (CPAWS) Southern Alberta chapter. She is a Professional Biologist with more than 20 years of experience in the environmental sector. She holds a B.Sc. in Environmental and Conservation Sciences from the University of Alberta and a Masters of Environmental Design from the University of Calgary. Katie has worked in Canada and Latin America for university research projects\, nongovernmental organizations\, and environmental consulting companies. She has an in-depth understanding of conservation\, ecology\, campaign and strategic planning\, community engagement\, and multi-stakeholder collaboration. Katie grew up camping\, canoeing\, fishing and horseback riding with her family\, which instilled a great sense of connection with the natural world. Katie is an avid hunter\, angler and all round outdoorsperson and stills feel happiest when she is outside discovering the wonders of nature and our place in it. \nMembers will receive a Zoom link for the event via email. \nNon-members can register for the event on Eventbrite.
