SUMMARY:Speaker Series - February 2020
DESCRIPTION:On the Road-Exploring the natural wonders and landscapes of Southern Alberta\nPresented by Mike Drew (http://mdrewimages.com/) \nPhotojournalist Mike Drew has been touring the backroads of central and southern Alberta since 1991\, taking photographs and writing stories for the Calgary Sun that have been enjoyed and shared by hundreds of thousands of readers. \nHis travels take him out of the city to the wide Alberta skies where the foothills are sparsely treed and the prairie vista takes precedence over just about everything. Whether driving lonesome highways\, hiking along coulees\, tramping through sagebrush or fly-fishing bright streams\, Drew patiently documents this enormous landscape and becomes one with its unique and varied environments. The resulting stories and images are always infused with Mike’s characteristic sense of joy\, wonder and excitement. \nDrew’s adventures cover a variety of regions along the eastern foothills of the Rocky Mountains\, including the upper Oldman River valley\, Waterton\, Kananaskis\, the Porcupine Hills\, the wild-horse country west of Sundre and on up through the Ya-Ha-Tinda\, as well as more prairie-tinged locales such as Dry Island Buffalo Jump\, Dinosaur Provincial Park\, the Red Deer River valley\, Milk River Ridge\, the Pinhorn grazing reserve\, the Cypress Hills and the windswept grasslands between Lethbridge and Medicine Hat. \n

SUMMARY:Bird Study Group - February 2020
DESCRIPTION:“War between the subspecies?  The continued northern march of the southern subspecies of White crowned Sparrows in Alberta.” \nSpeaker: Dr. Scott Lovell \nOver the past four years\, I have examined song\, plumage\, and genetics of two subspecies of White-crowned Sparrows along the front range of the Rockies\, from Waterton to just east of Jasper.  Preliminary data analyses suggests that the song of the southern subspecies has been moving northern at a very rapid rate over the past ~35 years\, and the contact zone between the southern and northern subspeceis of White-crowned Sparrows has moved north as well.  Plumage transitions have moved north too\, but at a much more gradual pace from the southern plumage pattern to the northern plumage pattern; unlike song which is a very rapid and narrow transition.  During my presentation\, I will present background into research into White-crowned Sparrows overall\, focusing in Alberta\, show what I have found during the last 4 years of my research in terms of changes in song and plumage\, and finally implications and suggestions as to why we are seeing this pattern.
