DESCRIPTION:On the island it is common to see Downy Woodpeckers\, Hairy Woodpeckers\, Norther Flickers\, Bald Eagles\, winter waterfowl\, and surprise visitors. Although most of the trails are free of ice\, the trail beside the Bow can be very icy\, so please bring spikes for your shoes. The icy section can be bypassed and the rest of the trails are suitable for all physical abilities. All walks will start and end at the parking lot located directly north of 656 Confluence Way SE on the RiverWalk pathway. Please dress for the cold! DESCRIPTION:Beasts of Birdin’ with David Scott\nBorn and raised in northern Ontario\, David Scott began venturing from home to find birds at age 16 and has been an avid birder and naturalist ever since. After moving to southern Alberta\, he came to love the birds of the prairies\, badlands\, foothills\, and mountains as he did those of the boreal forest on the Canadian shield. A librarian by trade\, David works at the University of Lethbridge and serves as interim chair of the Alberta Bird Record Committee and the Christmas Bird Count editor for the province. He has also spent several years on the board of Nature Lethbridge and has authored and coauthored articles published in Nature Alberta Magazine\, North American Birds\, and Western Birds. However\, for the purposes of this presentation\, David is one of six birders of dubious sanity who recently undertook a big day from Cold Lake to the Crowsnest Pass in an effort to tally as many bird species as possible in 24 hours. \nDavid resides in Lethbridge\, Alberta with his wife\, Emma\, and son\, Lewis\, who recently received his first pair of binoculars. \nMembers will receive a Zoom link ahead of the event. \n

DESCRIPTION:Join CPAWS’ Katie Morrison for a talk on coal mining in the Eastern Slopes & how we can protect them. \nKatie Morrison is the Executive Director for the Canadian Parks and Wilderness Society (CPAWS) Southern Alberta chapter. She is a Professional Biologist with more than 20 years of experience in the environmental sector. She holds a B.Sc. in Environmental and Conservation Sciences from the University of Alberta and a Masters of Environmental Design from the University of Calgary. Katie has worked in Canada and Latin America for university research projects\, nongovernmental organizations\, and environmental consulting companies. She has an in-depth understanding of conservation\, ecology\, campaign and strategic planning\, community engagement\, and multi-stakeholder collaboration. Katie grew up camping\, canoeing\, fishing and horseback riding with her family\, which instilled a great sense of connection with the natural world. DESCRIPTION:Presenter: Dr. Jaime Pinzon\, Research Scientist with the Department of Natural Resources Canada (Canadian Forest Service) \nThis talk will offer a broad introduction to spiders\, highlighting fascinating facts about this diverse group of arachnids. Jaime will explore the crucial roles spiders play in terrestrial ecosystems and their significance for biodiversity. Additionally\, he will share examples of current research from his lab\, demonstrating how spiders can be used in ecological studies\, particularly in an Albertan context. Whether you fear spiders or find them intriguing\, his hope is that by the end of this talk\, you’ll see them in a more positive light. \nDr. Jaime Pinzon is a Research Scientist with the Department of Natural Resources Canada (Canadian Forest Service)\, based in Edmonton at the Northern Forestry Centre. Jaime is a Biologist from Colombia\, where he worked for Conservation International – Colombia as part of the Amazon Program team\, conducting biodiversity research and environmental education with indigenous communities. In 2011\, he earned a PhD degree in Wildlife Ecology and Management from the University of Alberta in Edmonton\, where he later continued as a postdoctoral fellow and now serves as and Adjunct Professor. Jaime is passionate about arthropods\, particularly spiders. Much of his research focuses on spider ecology and broader biodiversity responses to natural and human disturbances\, with a special emphasis on forest management and land restoration. Beyond his professional work\, Jaime is dedicated to improving public perception of spiders. At home in Edmonton\, he keeps over 20 tarantulas in terrariums\, further reflecting his deep fascination with these creatures. \nMembers will receive a Zoom link via email ahead of the presentation. \nNon-members can register here.

DESCRIPTION:Join Nature Calgary for a bird walk on St. Patrick’s Island on April 13\, 2025 and observe the fascinating variety of birds found in their natural habitat. \nBuy tickets on Eventbrite. \nPlease note that this event will run 9:30am – 11:30am \nWe are on the look out for woodpeckers\, waterfowl\, and early spring arrivals. We’ll talk about some of the history of the island\, some of the changes it’s gone through and maybe even spot one of the beavers or mink that frequent the Island! \nOur knowledgeable guide will share fascinating insights about the birds and other wildlife you encounter and talk about their behaviours\, making this a great educational opportunity for nature enthusiasts of all ages. \nWe will have binoculars available for participants who don’t have them. Space is limited so don’t miss your chance to discover the beauty and diversity of Calgary’s birdlife on this exciting nature walk! \nThese walks are presented in partnership between East Village and Nature Calgary\, with all registration fees being donated directly to Nature Calgary. \nAll walks will start and end at the Hygge Hut\, located directly north of 656 Confluence Way SE on the RiverWalk pathway. \nPlease note that this is an outdoor event please dress for the conditions. We will provide notice in writing and refund your tickets if the weather meets the following conditions: \n\nAdverse weather conditions (Smoke\, Heavy Rain/Snow\, flooding\, etc.)\nTemperatures below -20C including wind chill\nAt the discretion of CMLC supervisor based on weather conditions.\n\nThe upcoming birding event is accessible to all\, regardless of age or ability. \n\nThe pathways are flat. Some pathways are unpaved but they are well compacted. The paved pathways are cleared for snow but there may be icy patches. SUMMARY:Glenbow Ranch Birding Tour
DESCRIPTION:*Please note – this event is hosted by Glenbow Ranch Park Foundation. Please see their registration system for details and direct all inquiries related to registration to the Foundation. \nGlenbow Ranch Provincial Park contains some of the last remaining foothills fescue grassland as well as a scattered mosaic of wetlands and wooded areas. This diverse habitat provides home to a wide variety of bird species. Unfortunately\, many of the best birding locations are far from the parking lot. Join GRPF Conservation Program Coordinator Blake Weis and Steward Annie Finch to visit the best locations on a golf cart tour of up to four hours where we’ll cover nearly 20 km of trail. \nWe are likely to see or hear around 30 to 50 bird species. During spring and fall migration we can expect to find a wide variety of migrating birds such as warblers\, sparrows\, and raptors. The breeding season offers grassland and foothills specialties like Vesper Sparrow\, Mountain Bluebird\, and Western Meadowlark as well as riparian species like Baltimore Oriole and many swallows\, sparrows\, and flycatchers. Some uncommon possibilities include Turkey Vulture\, Prairie Falcon\, Rock Wren\, Sprague’s Pipit and Spotted Towhee. SUMMARY:5th Annual Park Cleanup - 68th Street Wetlands
DESCRIPTION:Our 5th Annual Park Cleanup at the 68th Street Wetlands is happening on May 3rd from 9:30am – Noon.  We are looking for 25 volunteers to help out.  \n \nWe provide gloves\, garbage pickers\, and bags.  We will also have snacks.  This series of storm water ponds is heavily impacted by the dump nearby but it is an important stop-over and nesting site to many birds.  It is a way to make a positive impact on the area and to ensure that birds have a cleaner home to live in.\n \nPlease sign up on Eventbrite.
