SUMMARY:Speaker Series (January 2023)
DESCRIPTION:Title: Riparian Areas the Emerald Thread Connecting Land and Water \nDescription: Riparian areas are the zones of water loving plants influenced by water that\, although small in size\, do allot for us. This presentation will offer an overview of riparian habitats including clues of plants and animals to look for\, discussion of the functions riparian areas provide and services they provide and highlight management actions that can maintain and improve riparian health and function. \nPresenter Bio: Kerri O’Shaughnessy is a Riparian Specialist for Cows and Fish and has been doing this type of work for 24 years with Cows and Fish.  In her job\, she works with individuals\, communities\, agencies and organizations on better understanding our watersheds and the riparian areas within them. She is based in Edmonton but her time with Cows and Fish has allowed her to explore many of the natural regions of Alberta (and beyond) and meet many people stewarding our lands and water.  Kerri has a Bachelor of Science in Environmental and Conservation Science from the University of Alberta; is a Professional Agrologist and is excited to share what she has learned over the years with hopes to inspire others to look at their landscapes with fresh eyes.

SUMMARY:Bird Study Group Meeting (December 2022)
DESCRIPTION:Shetland – Birds\, ponies\, and people. \nPresenter: Andrew Hart\nThe Shetland Islands are the northern most part of Great Britain. This isolation has resulted in some endemic Shetland species and several Arctic and Northern European visitors and vagrants that are rarely\, if ever\, seen in the rest of the country.\nAndrew will talk about his visit to the Shetlands this summer. This included a day on Unst\, the most northerly inhabited island as well as visits to a number of RSPB bird reserves. \nNo description of the Shetlands would be complete without mentioning Shetland ponies. \nThe northern location has resulted in a distinct Scandinavian heritage in Shetland\, evidenced by some Viking settlements\, several place names\, and the Shetland Bus which ferried agents to Norway during World War II. \nPresenter Bio:\nAndrew has been a Nature Calgary member for several years\, including terms as Nature Calgary president and BSG co-ordinator. \nMembers please look in your email Newsletter for links to the Zoom meeting. \nDate: Dec 7\, 2022\nMeeting Opens at 7:15pm\nPresentation Starts at 7:30pm \n
