SUMMARY:Bird Study Group (Oct 2022)
DESCRIPTION:Newfoundland – Birds and More \nPresenter: Howard Heffler \nIn June 2022\, Howard and Lyn Heffler visited Newfoundland for 18 days. The primary focus was birding – specifically sea birds. They also wanted to learn more about the history of Canada’s youngest province; interestingly\, the one with the oldest European settlements. There are several easily accessible seabird colonies with (truly) millions of nesting birds. They joined a three-day birding tour of the Avalon peninsula and explored the rest of the island on their own. All the way to Gros Morin National Park and L’Anse aux Meadows National Historic Site for a total of 3000 km on the rental car. Birding highlights included: Atlantic Puffin\, Common Murre\, Northern Gannet\, Leach’s Storm-Petrel\, and more. \nHoward Heffler has been a Nature Calgary member for 20+ years. He has participated in many field trips\, including leading field outings\, and coordinating the field trip program for the past few years. He is a retired engineer (that is likely obvious to all of you)\, with a 45 year-career in pollution control and environmental management. \nMembers please look in your email Newsletter for links to the Zoom meeting. \nDate: Oct 5\, 2022\nMeeting Opens at 7:15pm\nPresentation Starts at 7:30pm

SUMMARY:Speaker Series (Sept 2022)
DESCRIPTION:Art of Seeing – Using nature photography\, art and observation to feel better \nDate: September 21\, 2022\nTime: 7:30 PM\nPresenter: David Elphinstone \nPresentation link will be sent to members. \nDavid has a degree specializing in biogeography\, with an emphasis on resource management and has spent most of his career working with the preservation of natural environment parks. He worked for the City of Calgary in various forms of Natural Area management for 40+ years starting as maintenance/naturalist at the Inglewood Bird Sanctuary.  In his job as Coordinator he worked with many people\, fighting for the protection of natural areas in the City. That included critical efforts by Nature Calgary (then the Calgary Field Naturalists’ Society).  He helped create the Natural Areas Management Plan\, coordinated the management of over 400 natural area parks in Calgary\, the Inglewood Bird Sanctuary volunteer program\, the Peregrine Falcon program\, he negotiated with the development industry for the preservation of natural areas\, and did environmental assessments to name a few.  In 1970\, he was the Chief Park Naturalist at Fish Creek Provincial Park\, and later taught nature photography\, hiking and bird watching for the City\, The University of Calgary and Mount Royal over the years. He also did consulting with his company “Kinglet Natural History Services” in other cities.  He wrote a book on the Bird Sanctuary and for many years wrote a nature column for the Calgary Herald.  The Natural Area Management Plan won numerous awards including Canadian Municipalities Environmental Achievement Award and he was lucky to be the recipient of the “2000” Emerald Award for environmental achievement.
