Using this method\, a densely-planted ‘tiny forest’ can grow many times faster than occurs in nature\, making this an excellent tool for rapidly greening urban areas. Dr. Addy will talk about the forests that have been planted in Calgary and the benefits of this method of planting! \nSpeaker biography: I am a biologist who studies plant-fungal interactions. As a Teaching Professor in the Biological Sciences department at the University of Calgary\, I taught a range of biology courses over the past 24 years and served as an Associate Department Head for seven years. In my teaching\, I emphasized collaborative learning approaches that helped students gain skills in teamwork and science communication\, as they worked together to apply what they learned to address real-world issues. Since my retirement in July 2022\, I have been volunteering with the Nature Node of the Calgary Climate Hub as part of the steering committee for the “Tiny Forests for Calgary” project. I am excited to serve on the board\, and to use my background and experience in biology\, teamwork\, and communication to support the mission of the Calgary Climate Hub. I am particularly interested in natural infrastructure solutions for climate resilience\, and strategies to support the work of Indigenous climate action groups and engage a broader diversity of Calgarians in climate action.

SUMMARY:2024 Calgary Christmas Bird Count
DESCRIPTION:The 2024 Calgary Christmas Bird Count happens December 15!\nThe Christmas Bird Count (CBC) is the longest-running citizen science project. It began in the year 1900 as a way to encourage people to appreciate birds while helping to conserve them through data collection. The Calgary event began in 1952 and is one of the largest CBC events in Western Canada with nearly 400 people participating annually. \nConsider this event to be the annual census of our winter birds in Calgary! It requires lots of people and effort to conduct this event\, so we are always looking for birders of all experiences and abilities to take part. We really aim to use this event as a way to build up our community of nature enthusiasts and would love for you to share the event information with your friends\, family\, colleagues\, and community. \nSkip the details below if you’re ready to sign up and hit the registration form here. \nThere are a few ways to participate: \nField Teams:\nWe have 38 circle sections and assign people to survey designated sections. All birds are identified and counted\, and it usually runs the entire day depending on our participants’ availability. Bird submissions are made via eBird and shared with our CBC Compiler account. We also accept field templates from people who prefer to use them. \nWe have section leaders who work with their groups to determine meeting locations\, targeted areas\, summarize effort data\, and submit it back to our compilation team. We are looking for both field participants and field leaders (both returning and new). \nFeeder Watchers (FWs):\nPeople (individuals and families) observe birds visiting their yards and feeders for a minimum of 30 minutes on count day. FWs submit their data using a pre-formatted template which we provide. FWs are very important for our count as they help to fill in the data gaps where our field teams can’t access due to time or privacy. FWs must reside within the count circle\, but we will confirm your address to ensure you are eligible to participate. \nData Entry/ Analysis:\n1. Anyone interested in helping us to compile data is welcome! Matt\, the event organizer\, often receives hundreds of emails with data templates\, photos\, and stories of the CBC. He would love to have an assistant to help with this! \n2. We continue to expand on our ways of showcasing the hard work of our volunteers. We have approximately 20 years of data (30 binders or so) which includes the detailed “section data” for the Calgary count. Yes\, we submit all of the cumulative count “Circle” data to Audubon each year\, but the section data is of interest to us on a local scale for showing how changes in our landscape and may influence bird populations. We would like to get all of this data entered prior to the 2024 count so that we can provide some additional infographics and analysis at the results presentation in January 2025. \n3. In addition to the data entry\, we would love anyone with skills in GIS and data visualization to join our compilation team in producing the final report (for media and the community). \nIf you are interested\, please register and we will be in touch soon! DESCRIPTION:Join Nature Calgary for a bird walk on St. Patrick’s Island on December 15\, 2024 and observe the fascinating variety of birds found in their natural habitat. This isn’t just your regular bird walk as it’s part of the 73rd annual Calgary Christmas Bird Count! \nFor registration and more information\, see Eventbrite. \nPlease note that this event will run 9:00am – 11:00am \nEach year\, hundreds of thousands of people around the world participate in Christmas Bird Counts. Calgary is no exception with nearly 400 people participating across the city in an effort to identify\, count\, and record every single bird overwintering within our count circle. Essentially this is a census of our winter bird populations. The Calgary Count Circle is 24km wide and is centered on the 10th street bridge over the Bow River. For 73 years\, Calgarian’s have participated in this event giving us a deeper look into how our urban landscape has changed and affected the biodiversity within it. It’s important and at the same time fun! \nJoin expert guides from Nature Calgary while participating in the field! We’ll also talk about some of the history of the island\, some of the changes it’s gone through and maybe even spot one of the beavers or mink that frequent the Island! \nOur knowledgeable guide will share fascinating insights about the birds and other wildlife you encounter and talk about their behaviours\, making this a great educational opportunity for nature enthusiasts of all ages while contributing to citizen science. \nWe will have binoculars available for participants who don’t have them. SUMMARY:December Speaker Series: Wildlife\, Landscapes & Geology - Exploring Connections
DESCRIPTION:Speaker: Dr. Dale Leckie\n \n\nIf you want to view wildlife in spectacular landscapes\, it helps to know a bit about the local geology. From rugged mountains\, to the rain shadow of the prairies\, to deeply entrenched rivers\, and glaciated terrain\, geology strongly impacts where wildlife lives.  \nSixty million years of erosion of the Rocky Mountains has created the rugged habitat on which mountain goats and bighorn sheep have adapted to survive\, virtually hanging onto sheer vertical cliffs formed on ancient reefs. To observe mountain goats in the Rocky Mountains\, look for salt licks in the rock flour of drained glacial lakes to which the animals travel far every summer. Talus slopes and rock falls\, the debris of that erosion\, has created protective habitat on which pikas and hoary marmots depend.  \nEvery spring and fall thousands of golden eagles migrate the length of the Rocky Mountains. Their route is controlled by southwest-dipping alpine slopes onto which strong prevailing westerly winds blow\, creating loft that these giant birds take full advantage of. Harlequin ducks and American dippers breed and feed in rapids and waterfalls of fast mountain streams where turbulent water flows over erosion-resistant rocks called knickpoints.  \nIn the prairies pronghorn antelope require semi-arid\, flat to gently rolling glacial terrain and expansive mixed grassland for survival. This setting allows antelope to use their long-range vision and capability to escape predators with intense bursts of speed. The vegetation on which antelope feed is controlled by aridity in the vast rain shadow of the Rocky Mountains. South-facing slopes of entrenched eroding river valleys\, glacial meltwater channels\, and badlands coulees provide favourable habitat and warmth for the greater short-horned lizard\, prairie rattlesnakes\, eastern yellow-bellied racers\, and bullsnakes \nDuring the last glaciation the kilometres-thick Laurentide Ice Sheet depressed the Earth’s crust across the prairies. When the ice melted\, the heavy load was reduced causing the prairies to uplift and river valleys to become deeply entrenched. Today\, meandering rivers in valley bottoms allow for the growth of towering cottonwood forests\, which are oases providing specialized refuge from sun and heat for birds\, reptiles\, and mammals. \nJoin Dale for an informative and engaging event to investigate the close relationship between wildlife\, landscapes\, and geology. \n\n \nSpeaker biography:\nDr. Dale Leckie is a geologist\, speaker\, and local best-selling author who worked at the Geological Survey of Canada and as chief geologist at Nexen\, a large Canadian energy company. He has edited numerous books and published widely on the geology of western Canada. He is adjunct professor in the in Earth\, Environment and Energy at University of Calgary. Dale has been recognized for his long-term contributions to geology and is an honorary member of Society for Sedimentary Geology and Canadian Energy Geoscience Association. Dale is 2024 recipient of the Geosciences in the Media Award by the American Association of Petroleum Geologists for his first two books. \nWildlife\, Landscapes\, and Geology: An Alberta and Saskatchewan Touring Guide is the third of his trilogy of best-selling books encouraging people to get out and explore. Strong possibilities are Gray Partridge\, Ring-necked Pheasant\, Bald Eagle\, and Great Horned Owl. Rarer possibilities include Gyrfalcon\, Prairie Falcon\, and Northern Goshawk. There may be others. SUMMARY:Bird Study Group: February 2025
DESCRIPTION:Beasts of Birdin’ with David Scott\nBorn and raised in northern Ontario\, David Scott began venturing from home to find birds at age 16 and has been an avid birder and naturalist ever since. After moving to southern Alberta\, he came to love the birds of the prairies\, badlands\, foothills\, and mountains as he did those of the boreal forest on the Canadian shield. A librarian by trade\, David works at the University of Lethbridge and serves as interim chair of the Alberta Bird Record Committee and the Christmas Bird Count editor for the province. He has also spent several years on the board of Nature Lethbridge and has authored and coauthored articles published in Nature Alberta Magazine\, North American Birds\, and Western Birds. However\, for the purposes of this presentation\, David is one of six birders of dubious sanity who recently undertook a big day from Cold Lake to the Crowsnest Pass in an effort to tally as many bird species as possible in 24 hours. \nDavid resides in Lethbridge\, Alberta with his wife\, Emma\, and son\, Lewis\, who recently received his first pair of binoculars. \nMembers will receive a Zoom link ahead of the event. \n
