Smits\, DVM\, MVetSc.\, PhD \n\n\nZoom details will be emailed to members.

SUMMARY:Birding On St. Patrick's Island
DESCRIPTION:Join Nature Calgary for a bird walk on St. Patrick’s Island on October 14\, 2024 and observe the fascinating variety of birds found in their natural habitat. This weekend trade turkey for some great fall migrants like yellow-rumped warbler\, wilson’s warbler\, and common grackle. We’ll talk about some of the history of the island\, some of the changes it’s gone through and maybe even spot one of the beavers or mink that frequent the Island! \nOur knowledgeable guide will share fascinating insights about the birds and other wildlife you encounter and talk about their behaviours\, making this a great educational opportunity for nature enthusiasts of all ages. \nWe will have binoculars available for participants who don’t have them. Space is limited so don’t miss your chance to discover the beauty and diversity of Calgary’s birdlife on this exciting nature walk! \nThese walks are presented in partnership between East Village and Nature Calgary\, with all registration fees being donated directly to Nature Calgary. \nAll walks will start and end at the East Village Headquarters\, located directly north of 656 Confluence Way SE on the RiverWalk pathway.

SUMMARY:Bird Study Group: November 2024
DESCRIPTION:Topic: Habitat Selection by Sandhill Cranes (Antigone canadensis) in Alberta using passive acoustics \nPresenter: Wyatt Villetard\, Master’s Student\, University of Alberta. \nPresenter Biography: My name is Wyatt Villetard\, I am a master’s student in Dr. Mark Boyce’s Lab at the University of Alberta. I was born and raised in Edmonton\, but like many Edmontonians\, I have family in Calgary and love spending time in your city. On my spare time you will most likely find me spending time at Elk Island National Park\, playing hockey\, or cheering on the Oilers (sorry). My thesis focuses on habitat selection of migratory and nesting Sandhill Cranes in Alberta. Specifically\, I am determining the effects of weather on migration and predicting high quality nesting habitat across the northern portion of the province using passive acoustics. For my talk I will primarily be focusing on Sandhill Crane life history\, the background of my master’s thesis project\, how passive acoustics work\, the pros and cons of passive acoustic monitoring versus radio telemetry\, and some preliminary results from my research. \nZoom details will be emailed to members.

SUMMARY:2024 Nature Calgary AGM
DESCRIPTION:Join us for our upcoming Annual General Meeting! \nAGM Details\nDATE: Sunday\, November 17\, 2024\nTIME: 1:30pm – 3:30pm\nLOCATION: “The Confluence” (formerly Fort Calgary) 750 9 Avenue SE in the Burnswest Theatre \nThe meeting will include a guest speaker\, Dr. Heather Addy. \nTopic: “Tiny” Forests for Calgary\nThe Calgary Climate Hub has teamed up with Alberta Ecotrust on the project Forests for Calgary. Together\, we are establishing small urban forests using the successful Miyawaki method. Using this method\, a densely-planted ‘tiny forest’ can grow many times faster than occurs in nature\, making this an excellent tool for rapidly greening urban areas. Dr. Addy will talk about the forests that have been planted in Calgary and the benefits of this method of planting! \nSpeaker biography: I am a biologist who studies plant-fungal interactions. As a Teaching Professor in the Biological Sciences department at the University of Calgary\, I taught a range of biology courses over the past 24 years and served as an Associate Department Head for seven years. In my teaching\, I emphasized collaborative learning approaches that helped students gain skills in teamwork and science communication\, as they worked together to apply what they learned to address real-world issues. Since my retirement in July 2022\, I have been volunteering with the Nature Node of the Calgary Climate Hub as part of the steering committee for the “Tiny Forests for Calgary” project. I am excited to serve on the board\, and to use my background and experience in biology\, teamwork\, and communication to support the mission of the Calgary Climate Hub. I am particularly interested in natural infrastructure solutions for climate resilience\, and strategies to support the work of Indigenous climate action groups and engage a broader diversity of Calgarians in climate action.
