SUMMARY:March Speaker Series: The Amazing World of Spiders
DESCRIPTION:Presenter: Dr. Jaime Pinzon\, Research Scientist with the Department of Natural Resources Canada (Canadian Forest Service) \nThis talk will offer a broad introduction to spiders\, highlighting fascinating facts about this diverse group of arachnids. Jaime will explore the crucial roles spiders play in terrestrial ecosystems and their significance for biodiversity. Additionally\, he will share examples of current research from his lab\, demonstrating how spiders can be used in ecological studies\, particularly in an Albertan context. Whether you fear spiders or find them intriguing\, his hope is that by the end of this talk\, you’ll see them in a more positive light. \nDr. Jaime Pinzon is a Research Scientist with the Department of Natural Resources Canada (Canadian Forest Service)\, based in Edmonton at the Northern Forestry Centre. Jaime is passionate about arthropods\, particularly spiders. Much of his research focuses on spider ecology and broader biodiversity responses to natural and human disturbances\, with a special emphasis on forest management and land restoration. Beyond his professional work\, Jaime is dedicated to improving public perception of spiders. At home in Edmonton\, he keeps over 20 tarantulas in terrariums\, further reflecting his deep fascination with these creatures. \nMembers will receive a Zoom link via email ahead of the presentation. \nNon-members can register here.

SUMMARY:December Speaker Series: Wildlife\, Landscapes & Geology - Exploring Connections
DESCRIPTION:Speaker: Dr. Dale Leckie\n \n\nIf you want to view wildlife in spectacular landscapes\, it helps to know a bit about the local geology. From rugged mountains\, to the rain shadow of the prairies\, to deeply entrenched rivers\, and glaciated terrain\, geology strongly impacts where wildlife lives.  \nSixty million years of erosion of the Rocky Mountains has created the rugged habitat on which mountain goats and bighorn sheep have adapted to survive\, virtually hanging onto sheer vertical cliffs formed on ancient reefs. To observe mountain goats in the Rocky Mountains\, look for salt licks in the rock flour of drained glacial lakes to which the animals travel far every summer. Talus slopes and rock falls\, the debris of that erosion\, has created protective habitat on which pikas and hoary marmots depend.  \nEvery spring and fall thousands of golden eagles migrate the length of the Rocky Mountains. Their route is controlled by southwest-dipping alpine slopes onto which strong prevailing westerly winds blow\, creating loft that these giant birds take full advantage of. Harlequin ducks and American dippers breed and feed in rapids and waterfalls of fast mountain streams where turbulent water flows over erosion-resistant rocks called knickpoints.  \nIn the prairies pronghorn antelope require semi-arid\, flat to gently rolling glacial terrain and expansive mixed grassland for survival. This setting allows antelope to use their long-range vision and capability to escape predators with intense bursts of speed. The vegetation on which antelope feed is controlled by aridity in the vast rain shadow of the Rocky Mountains. South-facing slopes of entrenched eroding river valleys\, glacial meltwater channels\, and badlands coulees provide favourable habitat and warmth for the greater short-horned lizard\, prairie rattlesnakes\, eastern yellow-bellied racers\, and bullsnakes \nDuring the last glaciation the kilometres-thick Laurentide Ice Sheet depressed the Earth’s crust across the prairies. When the ice melted\, the heavy load was reduced causing the prairies to uplift and river valleys to become deeply entrenched. Today\, meandering rivers in valley bottoms allow for the growth of towering cottonwood forests\, which are oases providing specialized refuge from sun and heat for birds\, reptiles\, and mammals. \nJoin Dale for an informative and engaging event to investigate the close relationship between wildlife\, landscapes\, and geology. \n\n \nSpeaker biography:\nDr. Dale Leckie is a geologist\, speaker\, and local best-selling author who worked at the Geological Survey of Canada and as chief geologist at Nexen\, a large Canadian energy company. He has edited numerous books and published widely on the geology of western Canada. He is adjunct professor in the in Earth\, Environment and Energy at University of Calgary. Dale has been recognized for his long-term contributions to geology and is an honorary member of Society for Sedimentary Geology and Canadian Energy Geoscience Association. Dale is 2024 recipient of the Geosciences in the Media Award by the American Association of Petroleum Geologists for his first two books. \nWildlife\, Landscapes\, and Geology: An Alberta and Saskatchewan Touring Guide is the third of his trilogy of best-selling books encouraging people to get out and explore. Dale’s previous books The Scenic Geology of Alberta\, and Rocks\, Ridges\, and Rivers were both best sellers all summer long the years they were released. \n \nMembers will receive a Zoom link ahead of the talk.\nNon-members can purchase tickets for the talk on Eventbrite.

SUMMARY:Speaker Series (March 2023)
DESCRIPTION:Karen McDaniel spent 45 years in education as a teacher\, administrator and professor starting in Kindersley and Saskatoon\, Saskatchewan before moving to Calgary\, Alberta for a long career with the CBE. After retirement\, she went on to Eastern Washington University in Cheney\, Washington.  She eventually returned to Calgary to work at SAIT negotiating articulation agreements provincially\, nationally and internationally so that SAIT graduates could take their two-year diplomas as two year credit towards four-year degrees. \nThis work afforded her many opportunities to travel for pleasure and work\, so far to over 40 countries. When she really retired\, her children were afraid that she would be bored and therefore needed some hobbies. Photography and geocaching – a world-wide scavenger game based on GPS coordinates – keep her very busy.  She is addicted to both! \nShe knows that every day that she is not listed in the obituaries\, is going to be a good one! \nThe McDaniel’s Great African Adventure\nIn 2014\, Karen and her daughter\, Laurel\, undertook their own African adventure to fulfill a birthday promise Karen made to her daughter. They planned a trip to Kruger Park in South Africa \, Victoria Falls in Zimbabwe and the Okavango Delta in Botswana. It was an amazing holiday that included photographing everything that walked\, flew and grew! They saw the Big Five animals plus so much more. The bird life was stunning as were the landscapes and experiences which included walking with lions\, an elephant charge (totally unplanned!) and amazing sights and sounds. Nothing like experiencing a hippo scratching its back against the cabin foundation poles in the middle of the night or listening to baboons screeching through the night! \nHer presentation will give you a taste of travelling in these areas and hopefully encourage you to look at such an adventure in your future.

DESCRIPTION:Something fishy’s going on! Seafood mislabeling in Calgary and its implications for conservation\nAbstract \nCalgarians consume a lot of seafood\, but what you bought may not always be what you got. Seafood mislabeling has been detected in cities worldwide. Here we explore a multi-year dataset collected by undergraduate biology students\, comparing product names to their DNA-based identifications. The results include some surprises that may impact the flourishing of both us and the fishes. \n  \nAbout the Author \nMatthew Morris has a PhD in evolutionary biology from the University of Calgary. His research explores the evolution of three spine stickleback\, as well as the intersection of conservation and naming practices. He is currently co-Chair of the biology program at Ambrose University\, and lives in Calgary with his wife and three kids. \n  \nMEMBERS – Check your Nature in Calgary Newsletter for the Zoom Link \nTICKETS FOR NON-MEMBERS
