DESCRIPTION:Topic: Barn Swallows: Migration and Speciation Across the Globe \nAbout the Speaker: \nGina Calabrese is a postdoctoral researcher at the University of Colorado Boulder.  She completed her Ph.D. at the University of North Carolina Chapel Hill in 2022\, and previously received her masters and bachelor of science degrees at the University of Texas at Austin. She began birding during an ornithology course at the University of Texas and was immediately hooked. In 2023\, she organized a Barn Swallow sampling expedition across southwestern Canada\, facilitated by help finding sites from birders from Calgary to Vancouver (including Nature Calgary members)\, as well as naturalists from Parks Canada and others.   \nZoom link will be sent to members on March 4th.

DESCRIPTION:Dr. Corey Scobie\nThe Lucrative Wild Bird Egg Shell trade in Early Alberta \nCorey Scobie (Assistant Curator of Ornithology\, Royal Alberta Museum) will show the diversity of bird egg shell colors\, shapes and textures and how the desire to possess these beautiful objects resulted in the creation of a popular hobby in the 1800’s. Wild bird egg shell collecting and trading was a popular hobby and quickly growing business in Canada until the Migratory Bird Convention Act was passed in 1917. Corey and Volunteers at the Royal Alberta Museum are cataloging a collection of over 3\,500 clutches of wild bird egg shells collected from all around the world spanning the period from 1860 to 1960. This collection originally belonged to Donald Wilby\, who started collecting and trading bird eggs in the 1880’s near Toronto\, Ontario and continued after he settled near Onoway\, Alberta in 1904. \nA Zoom link for the session will be sent to members ahead of time.

DESCRIPTION:Topic: Habitat Selection by Sandhill Cranes (Antigone canadensis) in Alberta using passive acoustics \nPresenter: Wyatt Villetard\, Master’s Student\, University of Alberta. \nPresenter Biography: My name is Wyatt Villetard\, I am a master’s student in Dr. Mark Boyce’s Lab at the University of Alberta. I was born and raised in Edmonton\, but like many Edmontonians\, I have family in Calgary and love spending time in your city. On my spare time you will most likely find me spending time at Elk Island National Park\, playing hockey\, or cheering on the Oilers (sorry). My thesis focuses on habitat selection of migratory and nesting Sandhill Cranes in Alberta. Specifically\, I am determining the effects of weather on migration and predicting high quality nesting habitat across the northern portion of the province using passive acoustics. For my talk I will primarily be focusing on Sandhill Crane life history\, the background of my master’s thesis project\, how passive acoustics work\, the pros and cons of passive acoustic monitoring versus radio telemetry\, and some preliminary results from my research. \nZoom details will be emailed to members.

In this talk\, Dr. Boyce will delve into the latest research findings\, including this year’s data\, to highlight the current status\, challenges\, and successful strategies in preserving this iconic bird. With decades of experience in wildlife ecology and a focus on adaptive management\, Dr. Boyce will provide an analysis of the ecological significance of sage grouse\, the threats they face from habitat loss and climate change\, and the collaborative efforts required to ensure their survival. This talk promises to be an essential update for conservationists\, ecologists\, and anyone interested in wildlife preservation.\n\n \nPresenter’s Bio: Mark S. Boyce received his BS from Iowa State\, MS from Univ of Alaska\, and MPhil and PhD degrees from Yale Univ; he was then a NATO postdoctoral fellow at Oxford University. He is Professor of Ecology and holds the Alberta Conservation Association Chair in Fisheries & Wildlife at the University of Alberta. His research specialty is population ecology of vertebrates and he currently supervises 9 graduate students. He is a Fellow of both the Royal Society of Canada and The Wildlife Society. Dr. Boyce has published over 350 peer-reviewed papers and 6 books.

He will present and discuss the results for the most commonly banded migrant bird species in Calgary. \nSpeaker Bio: Mathias Fenton is an Ecology and Biology instructor at Mount Royal University with a passion for birds and data analysis. He has been involved as a volunteer with the Calgary Bird Banding Society (CBBS) since 2012 after initially learning how to band birds during a summer job at Long Point Bird Observatory in Ontario. His interest in the collected data from migration monitoring conducted by CBBS at Inglewood Bird Sanctuary since 1995 led him to conduct and refine trend analysis to see how populations of the different bird species migrating through Calgary are changing over time.

DESCRIPTION:Presentation Name: Eagle Count\nDate: Wednesday\, March 6\, 2024\nTime: 7:30pm \nPresentation Info:\nEvery year thousands of Golden Eagles fly along the ridges past Banff and Canmore – migrating north in the spring and back south in the fall. For more than 30 years\, teams of citizen scientist volunteers with the Rocky Mountain Eagle Research Foundation have been monitoring this amazing migration from the banks of the Kananaskis River near Kananaskis Village. This talk will cover the history of the eagle count\, what it’s like to be out at the count\, trends determined so far\, and how the count fits with other raptor counts across the continent. \nPresenter Bio:\nAfter retiring early from a career in tech\, Caroline immersed herself in the world of birding. She now makes use of her expertise by participating in various citizen science projects throughout the year in addition to the eagle migration count\, such as various bird counts\, bird banding\, and breeding bird surveys. She is a principal observer for the eagle migration count and a member of the board of the Rocky Mountain Eagle Research Foundation\, in charge of the data and technical side of the operation. She pivoted towards birds\, after an internship in South Africa. Upon returning\, she worked with Piping Plovers in Saskatchewan and now coordinates the Ontario Piping Plover Conservation Program for Birds Canada. She also hosts the Warblers Podcast for Birds Canada\, where she sneaks plover related content into as many episodes as possible! \nAmanda Bichel: I have a background in Environmental Studies and Biology\, and have worked with birds\, bats\, soil\, and water. Connecting with nature is what motivates me to work in conservation\, and the hope that the next generation has the same (or better) opportunity to experience the beauty of nature I’ve enjoyed my whole life. My role is to coordinate the Key Biodiversity Areas Program for Birds Canada. DESCRIPTION:New Zealand\nSpeakers: John and Lorrie Anderson \nLorrie and I traveled to New Zealand in November of 2022 and stayed for 5 weeks (which is their early spring). Birding is a little different in New Zealand\, as a lot of the endemics and migrants are seen on pelagic trips with the rest of the endemics located at predator free locations throughout the islands. Introduced species were relatively easy to find. We were on a guided birding trip\, for 3 of the 5 weeks\,  covering 4200 km. We traveled from the North Island all the way down to Stewart Island in the south.  We saw & photographed interesting birds and encountered amazing scenery along the way.

With this in mind\, it is absolutely vital to any team to have a top notch bird biologist to help with those data\, and train others who have the desire and interest to learn. \nDan’s area of specialization is focused on bird surveys of all types\, including breeding birds\, sharp-tailed grouse\, burrowing owls\, and bird migration surveys to support renewable energy projects. DESCRIPTION:Investigating potential introgression between two North American passerines in western Canada\nSpeaker: Aaron Veale \nHybridization may increase when one species is rarer than the other (e.g.\, when one species does not have an established population\, in endangered\, or is on the edge of its range). With the eastward range expansion of Western Bluebirds (Sialia mexicana)\, territory originally held solely by Mountain Bluebirds (Sialia currucoides)\, brings the two species into contact. Both are sexually dimorphic birds and obligate secondary cavity nesters\, preferring open woodland habitat where they feed on terrestrial insects. The low initial population density of Western Bluebirds in Alberta may cause scarcity in mate availability\, leading to competition for limited mating opportunities with Mountain Bluebirds. Although distinct species\, pairings between the two results in viable\, fertile offspring. Using next-generation sequencing\, the aim of my study is to establish the frequency of heterospecific mating\, analyze areas of overlap for both first generation and advanced hybrids\, and detect genetic introgression in Mountain Bluebird populations.

This isolation has resulted in some endemic Shetland species and several Arctic and Northern European visitors and vagrants that are rarely\, if ever\, seen in the rest of the country.\nAndrew will talk about his visit to the Shetlands this summer. DESCRIPTION:Not ANOTHER Pandemic—Highly pathogenic avian influenza in wild birds \nPresenter: Dr. Dayna Goldsmith\nThis presentation will begin with a brief introduction of what it means to be an influenza virus and the history of avian influenza in Canada. The presentation will then move into a review of the current outbreak with a focus on wild birds including how we do surveillance for avian influenza in the province\, a discussion of what I have seen here at the diagnostic lab (this will include images of dead birds and tissues) and current trends across North America. At the end of the talk I will go through the answers to some commonly asked questions including those that have already been brought forward by the group. \nPresenter Bio:\nDr. Dayna Goldsmith Graduated from UCVM in 2013 as part of the second graduating class of vet students. Completed a residency in Anatomic Pathology at the University of California Davis becoming a diplomat of the American College of Veterinary Pathologists in 2016. Worked as a sessional instructor as part of the department of Ecosystem and Public Health at UCVM for 9 months in 2016-2017. DESCRIPTION:Newfoundland – Birds and More \nPresenter: Howard Heffler \nIn June 2022\, Howard and Lyn Heffler visited Newfoundland for 18 days. The primary focus was birding – specifically sea birds. They also wanted to learn more about the history of Canada’s youngest province; interestingly\, the one with the oldest European settlements. There are several easily accessible seabird colonies with (truly) millions of nesting birds. They joined a three-day birding tour of the Avalon peninsula and explored the rest of the island on their own. All the way to Gros Morin National Park and L’Anse aux Meadows National Historic Site for a total of 3000 km on the rental car. Birding highlights included: Atlantic Puffin\, Common Murre\, Northern Gannet\, Leach’s Storm-Petrel\, and more. \nHoward Heffler has been a Nature Calgary member for 20+ years. He has participated in many field trips\, including leading field outings\, and coordinating the field trip program for the past few years. DESCRIPTION:Whooping Cranes – Canada’s Conservation Success Story\nPresenter: Stan Shadwick \nThe Whooping Crane is North America’s tallest and most elegant native bird. Although still an endangered species\, their Canadian population has increased 33-fold from the early 1940s when they were on the brink of extinction. \nIn his presentation\, Stan will summarize the role that Canadian biologists\, naturalists and conservation organizations played in protecting this majestic bird. He will also add some personal Whooping Crane observations during the past 40 years while leading birding tours to view migrating cranes near Saskatoon. \nStan Shadick has had a keen interest in both birds and astronomy for over 6 decades. He has been a past president and active member of both the Saskatoon Nature Society and Nature Saskatchewan. In 2004\, he was awarded the Meewasin Conservation Award for his efforts to support conservation of natural habitat.  He was editor of Birds of Saskatoon reference book and contributed to the recently published – Birds of Saskatchewan. \nAfter retiring in 2018 as a university astronomy instructor\, he has volunteered his time leading birding tours to Saskatchewan’s birding hotspots with Saskatoon Custom Bird Tours as a fundraiser for Saskatoon’s Living Sky Wildlife Rehabilitation charity. His goal for these tours is to make Saskatchewan an important ecotourism destination.
