Do you have young children and would like to introduce them to the world of birds and nature by exploring Fish Creek? Try the Family Birding Course presented by the Friends of Fish Creek and Nature Calgary. The goal of this course is to engage beginning birders and families in the joy of birding, share interesting bird facts and teach basic bird identification skills for common species.

This course is perfect for children between the ages of 4 to 8 years of age, entering kindergarten to entering grade 3. A parent or guardian must stay for the full session.

Update (June 12)

Our first visit was to the Headquarters area of FCP.  Participants had lessons in using binoculars (find the rubber ducky) and how to describe where a bird is (hint: “over there” isn’t the best!).  After a visit to the friendly neighbourhood owl nest, small groups explored the area.   The owlets were a big hit!

Our second trip was to Carburn Park.  A beautiful day to discover this gem of a park (it was new to several families).  Participants were able to explore the difference in habitat (water vs. woodland) and hone their listening and looking skills.

There have been up to 18 children participating, from toddlers to elementary aged students.  Parents and grandparents have joined in the fun.  It has been a great opportunity to encourage outdoor family outings – birding is a great excuse to get outside!

Our final visit will be to the Inglewood Bird Sanctuary.
